My son recently asked me who my favourite villain is. Without batting an eyelid, I told him that the Joker is definitely my favourite. We went on to discuss this character. The Joker represents the thoughts that we often have but cannot express, as such thoughts are often socially unacceptable. The Joker expresses the crazy in all of us. His crazy drives him to achieve many of his goals and plans (despite the plans being evil).
Over time, I've learnt to accept my own crazies. I've learnt to recognize the crazy in me, call it what it is, and manage it. Some of my crazies are obsessions with things and activities. So far a few of them are beginning to bear some financial fruits!
My first of many - there are quite a few. It's best that I don't list them all, else some readers will be sending a straitjacket my way. I love walking into the haberdashery and fabric store and just walking through the shelves looking and feeling fabrics, imagining what I could make with the fabric. I can spend hours in the store, walk out with no purchase, and still feel a sense of fulfillment.
Most often than not though, I walk out of there with pieces of one-metre fabric and no idea what I would do with them. I must mention that I do have a sewing machine. I can sew any shape of an item, as long as it is square or rectangular.
When the many one-metre pieces of fabric started running out of storage space, I had to bring this crazy to order. I went on YouTube to see what I could learn to sew.
I tried sewing masks. But the really stylish ones are neither square nor rectangular in shape. So I abandoned that idea. What caught on was the buffs/ headgears/ gaiters. These are stylish for this current Covid-19 period, as well as the environment where I work. I had a buff for every day of the month (figuratively speaking).
Colleagues started making personal requests, and one thing led to another- soon I had bulk orders for Mandela day, and Women's day - a great side hustle!
Spending time at a fabric store no longer feels weird. It's work, and it pays!
So what's the moral of this crazy story you ask?
1- "The more you learn, the more you earn" Warren Buffet. - Learn a new skill or improve your current skill, and it will pay off.
2- "If you can get paid for doing what you love, every paycheck is a bonus" Oprah Winfrey - Your hobby, that which you do for fun, can lead to additional income.
3 - "If you're good at something, never do it for free", Joker from the movie, The Dark Knight. Simply put, sell that which you are good at.
